During the summer of 2020 we have been working hard behind the scenes with Creative Barking & Dagenham to imagine a special version of Bridge for summer 2021, to coincide with Coventry's year as UK City of Culture.
Creative Barking & Dagenham specialise in bringing artists together with local communities to develop exciting creative adventures and experiments that leave a lasting positive legacy in their local area, so seemed the perfect partner to further explore Bridge’s themes of bridging divides and connecting across difference.
Covid-19 has meant our usual ways of working with others has changed a little, and we temporarily suspended all face to face activities but remained busy online, making new connections via the magic of Zoom. An open call invited individuals, organisations, groups of artists, makers, performers and creative people living or based in Barking and Dagenham to respond to the themes of the Bridge as part of a creative project, either from their own homes and/or staying within the current rules and context of social distancing.
After much deliberation 5 artists, from different disciplines, have been selected to work with the Barking and Dagenham community on 4 exciting Bridge projects during autumn 2020: Grace Duggan, Jacqueline Otite, Silvano Griffith-Francis and Naomi Joseph are creating a wonderful range of activities that we are really excited to be able to share with you over the coming months. The local community is invited to become Bridge Explorers and take part in quests, workshops, writing, illustration and balloon bridge building activities!
